The eternal hourglass of existence

When the Apostles were gathered together in the upper room the Holy Spirit descended upon them. It was then that they understood the meaning of the Passion. Indeed it was at Pentecost that they were ‘confirmed in grace’, a state in which the Blessed Virgin Mary always existed and Saint Joseph from the womb.

This understanding is above and prior, something which comes from stillness, from calm concentration, a centering which is evident from writings and the lives of the Saints and others. I wrote previously that the goal of man was to recover what was lost – the primordial ‘aspect of eternity’. Even Friedrich Nietzsche understood that to view life with wonder was the goal of man in his concept of Eternal Recurrence. He wrote:

“The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down again and again, and you with it, speck of dust … never have I heard anything more divine!”

The Scriptures tell us that from dust we were formed and to dust we shall return. Whatever we have achieved in this life will be taken with us to the next life. Cologero Salvo has written about memory, it is a worthy exercise to begin now rather than later. For if we consider that our thoughts and actions will remain with us forever we might take more time to imitate the Divine.
